GHOST FEELINGS MOLESKIN

ROMANCE TEEPEE MOLESKIN

Its been a while since I posted a Moleskin drawing but I have been getting back into the swing of things and have started drawing on my train ride home. I did the teepee (in your face Felipe) and also found the image. Maris Turner did the genius drawing over it. The whole scene makes me laugh every time I see it. Enjoi!

HALLOWEEN BLOGMAIL MIX 09

Sorry, I was hoping to have this done earlier in the week but I have been feeling strange for the last few days and not sure what is wrong with me.

TRACKLIST:

So the playlist tells a bit of a story.
There is DANGER and a WARNING due to the FULL MOON and duh, SHE WOLVES... no wait its ZOMBIES and they are SHAKING UP THE CITY with their SLOW WALK. Then there is A BROKEN SKELETON KEY and I am CONVINCED OF THE HEX that goes with it. Then, I hear a COFFIN TRICK so I jump in car. But wait...MY CAR IS HAUNTED so I pull over and go to the DISCO WITH THE DEVIL. I hate it there because I hate the devil and there are BAD ROBOTS. So I go to a friends house but THRE ARE GHOSTS IN THIS HOUSE, even a GLASS GHOST. I go home and count sheep to fall asleep. I dream of not 1, not 2, but 3 witches. A normal WITCH, THE WITCH and later I am involved in a BALD WITCH HUNT. The End.

¡Happy Halloween!

MORE WEIRDNESS FROM RUEHL

Another graphic I worked on while at Ruehl. This graphic never made it though the endless filters but everyone loved it except the right people. One of my personal favs.
Thanks Joanna Grant for writing such an amazing saying. This graphic makes me want to watch Rocky 2 or Gremlins...no wait, Coccoon 2.

OUT WITH A BANG!!

One of the last Fleece packages I did while at Ruehl. I worked on these with Mike Carney and I think that they ended up looking amazing. See real images and buy them here.

MY 80's DREAM COME TRUE

"Sinister Ornithology" • 24" x 24" • Mixed media on Wood

Close Up #1

Close Up #2

So here is the final painting I had commissioned from Paul Rentler. It was a perfect accumulation of our points of view. I knew I wanted to have Skeletor and then I mentioned I wanted him to be fighting Teen Wolf or a Transformer so I got Soundwave (my personal favorite Transformer) and his cassette Lazerbeak. And then Slimer just really needed to be there too.

Here is what somebody said on Facebook:
"Lazerbeak rules! there is no way skeletor would get the drop on him. Anyway, if he did, ravage would totally pounce on his *%#!"
and Paul's reply:
"You've got it all wrong Skeletor is only trying to stun Lazerbeak so he can tag him, and monitor his migration patterns. Slimer is there to make sure its done in a humane manner."

I totally love the painting and can't wait to hang it up in my new Brooklyn apartment. See the post below for process. Enjoi!

Here was the process of how he created my painting. Mixed media: watercolor, acrylic, marker and multiple screen prints.

Paul Rentler = Mind Blown

In the Lab • 24" x 24" • Mixed media on Wood

Went to Gallery Hop last night and saw some amazing work by a Columbus artist named Paul Rentler. I really wanted to buy the painting shown above, but with the move to NY coming up, it didn't make the most sense. I will probably regret not buying it for a longtime but I contacted him on Facebook and I might commission him to do another Skeletor painting. Maybe Skeletor fighting Teen Wolf while the Decepticon SoundWave referees? Or Teen Wolf fighting Beast Man in front of Wolf Mountain. What do you guys think of those ideas? You guys know how fond I am of werewufs.

He has a ton of amazing work on his site. Peep it here:

Amy Bennett

I had to make a post about this artist after seeing some of her stuff on fffound.

When I first saw her paintings I thought there was something really unusual about the way her scenics looked. They seemed more like toys than real life. Then I read on her website that she actually creates detailed 3D models to serve as evolving still lifes from which she paints her narrative paintings. Pretty awesome! I love the way her trees and water look. Enjoi!

Neon Indian

Art by me

The Band: Neon Indian

The Buzz: A collaboration between Alan Polomo and visual artist Alicia Scardetta, Neon Indian gained early buzz by successfully keeping their identities a well-guarded secret. Over time they were outed, but that didn’t quell the hype. A seamless integration of Palomo’s heavy-lidded junk-fi techno and Scardetta’s trippy visuals, Neon Indian are perfecting a kind of dance music for the lazy. One of their songs is called “Terminally Chill,” which actually describes their sound perfectly.

Listen If: You know, you’re terminally chill.

Sounds Like: “Deadbeat Summer” sounds like a MGMT record warped in the sun and played at the wrong rpm. Perfect for these warmer evenings and lazy days ahead.

Key Track: Blog breakout “Deadbeat Summer,” a 900-ton piece of electropop that’s fantastically sluggish — the sound of dance music doused with cough syrup and fronted by a guy who sings as if he’s distracted by the television.

Note: The art was inspired by the music and done in a really lazy way. Google Neon Indian and then just neon...combine two images I found, add a layer effect in psd and BOOM! MAGIC!!

JULY 2009 BLOGMAIL MIX

This is my favorite mix I have ever done. Some of the tracks have been played 20+ times this month. So, on behalf of my best mix, I decided to go all out and create a wild piece of cover art that encompasses the vibe of the mix; A catchy mix of bent guitars, ditzy pop melodies and reverberated vocals set to a momentum of bass and rock drums. The mix has a lot of this new music genre that Pitchfork has dubbed "Glo-Fi"while others are calling it "Medio-Core, or "Lo-Tide"??? Here is what a blog had to say about the genre.

"So you go and start your own medio-core glo-fi lo-tide bro-fi no-wavves laptop band. You make one cool song using Garage Band and some samples you stole from some late 70s Nigerian afro-pop septet (but it's ok, because you lo-fi'd and synth'd the crap out of them). ). Some blogs, desperate to stay with this new trend, pick up on your song, calling you the new "Washed Out." You did it, bro. You're finally cool again. - iguessimfloating

Well, I guess you could say I am on trend with the June n' July mixes. Here are a few of the notable heavy hitters of this micro-genre; Neon Indian, Washed Out, Toro y Moi and Memory Cassette.

1. Atlas Sound - Walkabout (w/ Noah Lennox)
2. Holiday Shores - Edge of Our Lives
3. Washed Out - You'll See It

6. Islands - No You Don't
7. The Silent League - Here's a Star (Neon Indian Mix)

FOUR YEARS OF COLLEGE

After I graduated from school I moved in with a couple of friends into this weird semi-haunted place that we called the Gary House. We put on sweet shows in the 3 car garage and had one really awesome Halloween party. Anyways, in the living room of this house somebody had found this poster at a thrift store. I always had a love/hate relationship with it. I mean who would have the nerve to make it and even buy it! But I always thought it was super hilarious to have hanging in the living room.

I also had made these stunning business cards that we could hand out to neighbors who might want to complain to cops about loud shows. The drawing was done by the great gargoyle wig.

SO LONG OLD FRIEND

R.I.P.R925
You will be missed.

EDIT:
Sorry that was so vague, but its true the CEO of A&F announced Thursday morning that Ruehl will close its doors completely by January 2010. So a lot of good fiends lost their job yesterday and today. I was lucky to be moved to work on the A&F women's graphic team. I will officially move over sometime in the next few weeks and in the meantime will be wrapping up graphics and production to get Ruehl through the Christmas season. It sucks bad! More for the fact that I had so much fun working with some great people. Yet change can be good and we will see what my future holds.

MAY 2009 BLOGMAIL MIX

TRACKLIST:

Some facts about the songs.
Your Twenties is a side project of guitarist from Metronomy.
The Robert Gomez album had some really great tracks but the rest of the album was weak so I just put the best ones in the mix.
Discovery is 1/2 Vampire Weekend 1/2 Ra Ra Riot + Autotune.
I met the singer from Neon Walrus way back on my mission in Mexico City.
You will love Deastro if you like MGMT or Cut Copy. One of the songs sounds like a Legend of Zelda remix.
The AIH Metronomy remix is dubbed out and perfect for summer.
And the band Emanuel and the Fear sounds like Sufjan playing a dance party.

RETURN OF THE WIZARD KINGS - PHASE 1 (2 of 6)

Many of you saw the first version of this drawing in the moleskin book. Well, I decided to make it part of the series of 14x17's I am doing in super-brights. The ink work alone took over 5 hours and there were some significant design modifications. More legs, drips, fingers and pattern. Should be fun to color with highlighters. I was originally fearful that with all the color and technique it would get too busy but now I think that will make it work. Stay tuned for PHASE 2.

And for those that asked, yes I do plan on documenting the show. I will be sure to make a meaty post will all the goodies sometime after the show.

On a side note, is it weird that the face of the owl reminds me of my Grandma?

NEW WORKOUT REGIME - 1 of 6

I was told that it would be cool if I took some of my moleskin sketches/doodles and reworked them on a larger scale. Here is the first in a series of 6 I am doing for the art show. It is 14x17 and the technique is marker transfer, highlighters, colored pencil, micron and white heavy body acrylic. Enjoi!

COURNOCOPIA OF BASS LOOPS

I am starting to play my bass more than I have in months. I was at a BARBI-Q last weekend and was trying to come up with a bass line on an acoustic guitar and realized that not playing for so long has made me really, really rusty; like inside of an old dumpster rusty.

Back when I bought my loop pedal in November of 2007 I was writing and playing a ton. I had a bunch of ideas for songs that I just never had the time to properly record into GarageBand. So, I compiled the songs into a mix and uploaded them for your critiquing. If there are any tracks that you guys think I should take and record into a proper song please let me know. The track titled "Loops" has 4-5 different song ideas. Enjoi!

MORE MARIS

MARIS TURNER & MY NEW PRINTS

Here are some images made by my friend Maris Turner who recently had an art showing. He had a bunch of prints for sale and I snagged up a few before they were gone. I love his unique illustration/design style and really love his type. What can I say I am pretty stoked to have some of his art hanging on my wall. Most of the prints are 16x20 and hand screened on textured art paper. Enjoi!

FLASH DANCER

Not a whole lot to say about this one except that it took a lot of planning. I marker transfered the dancer and then sketched out where I wanted to have the noodles go knowing ahead of time that I wanted them to interact with the neon prisms. I might go and buy a white out pen so I can fill the noodles in and give them more punch. What do you guys think?

WHO LET THE NOODLES OUT?

I may claim this drawing/doodle/collage to be one of my weirdest to dates. Look at it up close to see how the noodles like to meander in and out of all the sexy people pictures. I think noodles have become my favorite design element to draw. They may even beat out diamonds, mustaches and tears...but just barely. Maybe I will do a drawing with all of them.
Maybe not.

Just another creepy moleskin drawing. They usually tend to come out every Sunday night.
I really suck at drawing hands, but maybe I will be better at tentacles. I was actually listening to the band WINDSURF while dawing this. The music makes me feel like I am the cool kid in high school in the 80's. I provided a link to the "Play the Game" music video. If you watch it, wait until the slow motion jumps and guitar grabs happen...pricelessly awkward! I also wish I owned that shirt the singer is wearing; FLASH on the front and a skinny little lightning blot on the back. And the Yeah Yeah Yeah's cover by Rogue Wave reminded me of when the YYY's performed "Maps" on the MTV music awards a few years ago (link provided above for the video). I remember thinking how awesome the set and performance was, especially the end when they dump a mother load of flower petals on Karen O. Enjoi!

PORTFOLIO - Capita Website

I did this website redesign as a project in school for CAPiTA snowboards. I have always been a huge fan of CAPiTA and wanted to give their site the same personality that their boards had.

PORTFOLIO - Logos

Just some random logos I have done over the years.
The 1st logo was for a spine doctor located in Idaho Falls.
The 2nd was done for the Eastern Idaho State Fair. It was meant to look like a big western belt buckle.
The 3rd was done for a fake snowboard brand I wanted to start. The word legion was carved out of real butter and then melted in a microwave.

PORTFOLIO - Mask of the Red Death poster

I designed this poster for a play based on the classic short story by Edgar Allan Poe. Someone once told me that I ripped of the idea from this movie poster, but mine was done long before that movie came out. I remember painting my hand and stamping it for hours and hours behind my apartment until I got a cool hand print. I had all these papers with wet hand prints lying on the ground and the reliable Idaho wind picked up and started blowing them around in the dirt. Most of them got ruined but in the process I ended up with some cool texture from the paint and dirt combo for the background. My Dad loves this poster and I ended up giving him a framed print for his office one year. I'm sure people were scratching their heads when they saw it.

PORTFOLIO - Grow Guitars

I designed this logo for my neighbor Al Grow while I was at school. He makes amazing handmade custom guitars and basses and I wanted to give him a logo that embodied his skill and craftsmanship.

PORTFOLIO - Skateboards

Just some decks I hand painted while in a Drawing 2 class. Thanks again Five-0 for the decks.
They were done with acrylic, gouache and black/silver Sharpies.

PORTFOLIO - the dirtycoat

Just a project from school that I always liked. I was kind of a dream project; design a magazine around things you like; art, snowboarding and music. It felt like one of the few projects where I got to do whatever I wanted. It may not be the most well designed magazine, but it really captures me in nut shell. The idea behind this project also turned into a zine that was made with some friends. Ahh, the good ol' days of the dirtycoat.

WIZARD'S BEARD

I have been doodling this strange line work for a few weeks so I thought I would do a more formal drawing of it and give it a spot in the old moleskin. I think I drew it because I am jealous of dudes that can grow a beard. After a few months of trying, I know now that it isn't in my future and a wizard would never see it in his crystal ball.

Sorry for the lack of art related posts lately. I haven't felt very inspired as of late to doodle in the moleskin or finish of one of the many paintings I have started. Maybe I will finish up a drawing I did that was based off trying to draw Falcor from memory. I didn't really work, and it ended up looking like a evil poodle with a Hitler stache. I called him Foulcore - the bad luck dragon. Enjoi!

LET'S GET JAZZED ABOUT 2009

This year is already starting off 88 million times better than 2008. Which sucks, because 2008 was supposed to be my year. 2008 ended up being one of the most difficult years to date of my adult life. I remember when I was 9 I had a really hard year in school, quite a few D's, one in Idaho History; how shameful. I know economically 2009 is looking to be one of the worst ever worldwide but I am not going to let the media scare me outta my moonboots.

So here is my list of things that could make 2009 mind-boggling, breathtaking, mythical and even...majestic, by date of course. And yes, I know that this list is ultra nerdy, but who cares; nerds are the new black. Click the links to check out trailers/info.

OLD/NEW PAINTING

Another painting that was started way back in 2005 and finished a few months ago. It now resides in my guest bathroom. And yeah, if anyone noticed it was my take on the painting "Grey Tree" by Piet Mondrian. I still like his better...it reminds me of spooky cobwebs.

The painting is done on 11x14 canvas and made with acrylic paint and black sharpie.

BURNING SHIPS

If you can't tell this painting is William Turner inspired. I have been working on it for quite a while because I never knew where to take it and then it hit me don't paint a boat like I wanted to but paint the remnants of some savage at sea battle. I think the colors lend themselves to the mood of a battle lost. Kinda feels like last year in a way. But just like the painting there is optimism in the clouds.

The painting is done on 12x16x3" canvas and painted with gouache and oils.

DECEMBURRR BLOGMAIL MIX

The Decemburrr mix is 1/2 Christmas themed and 1/2 regular songs that I have found over the month of December. I am really diggin' the early Jeremy Jay stuff (not so much his new album though), especially the song "Airwalker", which may take the place as my new favorite song to skate/snowboard to. The original favorite has been "A Cure" by Blonde Redhead since 2001. I feel nervous about giving the spot up but "Airwalker" is genius.

I hope everyone enjoyed the year of mixes, albums and other nonsense. I was going to call it quits with the whole blog mail thing in 2009 but I think for the meantime I will keep it up unless I get to busy with WOVEN stuff. Please, please feel free to make a comment or two on the mixes, etc. It lets me know that people are actually downloading the stuff.

I hope everybody has a great Holiday season and enjoys time with family and friends. I will be leaving Monday evening to fly home to Idaho Falls until January 5th, so if you are around lets meet up and go rollerblading or have a late lunch or get a new hair style.

Until next year...Peace on Earth, Goodwill, Salvation Army.

HYPE ALERT - JEREMY MENDE

After thumbing through the new Print Regional Design Annual, there was one designer/firm that really stood out to me. The firm is MendeDesign, and the chief designer is Jeremy Mende. The reason the work stood out to me was becasue for the last several years all the good posters have had the screen printed look with minimal color schemes, subtle texture and usually larger type and are usually for indie bands. After seeing his work it was really refreshing to se posters that just felt new and original. And I love the fact that he is using ultra small type. So, do yourself a favor and go gab the Annual and check out his work.

MY MUSIC TIMELINE

I have been asked more than a few times to upload some of the music I have made over the years. So, I searched for all of the usable music that I have been involved in making since I got home from my mission. I have been in a lot of bands over the years and always spend time writing music or just playing my bass. So, here is a timeline of music I could find and a brief explanation.

Hyadus  - was a band I played in while at college for a few months with my good friend Rachel Couch (guitar) and this Cali surfer guy that looked kinda like Owen Wilson (drums)I played bass, duh. I think we only played 1 real show which was a Battle of the Bands and we found a singer the day of the show... his name was Richard I think. He was strange and super emo before emo's really came onto the scene. He winged the lyrics the whole show and we ended up placing 2nd in the battle.

¿Cuál Bruja? - the band name means Which Witch?, in Spanish. It was something I messed around with when GarageBand first came out on the Mac. I started taking MIDI files from video games and then remixing them. I tried music from tons of games including Contra, Metroid, Double Dragon and even Blaster Master, but they never really worked out. The only ones that really went somewhere were tracks from the game Snow Brothers and Lemmings.
At this same time I bought a mini USB keyboard that I started playing, so I am sure my primitive skills on the keyboard are very evident.

Antler - this was another band that I started with my friend Rachel Couch and Stacey Whitmore (drums) while at BYU-Idaho. Plus there was another guitarist but I can't for my life remember his name. We practiced a lot in Rachel's basement and I think only played 1 show in that basement.

Ghost Mane - A band started out of boredom with my little brother Jordan the stupid idea to write songs based on the concept of combining a monster with some form of hair. We played a few shows for friends and family but only played one official show near Halloween in the Gary garage in Rexburg, ID. The best garage ever for playing shows and skateboarding during the winter. The show involved me playing bass and jordan playing drums and for a brief introduction like 15 canning jars filled with water. We also never talked once during the entire show and had an overhead projector with everything we wanted to say about ourselves and the songs ready and cut-out on transparencies. It was a weird show to say the least. The weirdest part was the Jordan wrote lyrics to the songs that were never meant to be sung, but to provide entertainment. And half way through the show people began trying to sing them. What a beautiful disaster.

Ghost Mane Solo - After I moved to Ohio I still had the urge to write songs based on the Ghost Mane concept. I started writing new songs on my own formed around me using bass loops and GarageBand. I still try and write new stuff every now and then because it has become a music obsession to write moderately spooky dance songs.

Tyson Schenk - Everything else could be grouped into this catagory. It is mostly stuff done the same way with my bass, keyboard and GarageBand but doesn't really sound spooky.

Here is a zipped file of recordings (54.57 MB) I have made under the different catagories. Hopefully you find something enjoyable in this to validate the download. Enjoi!

RATATAT - SHEMPI

Awesomely weird in all the right ways. A lot of the faces in the video remind me of Vigo from Ghostbusters 2. Enjoi!

MORE MOLESKIN

So I photocopy transfered this bust into my moleskin months ago and never really knew quite what to do with it. This was my solution. The bust came from an old magazine ad for Marlboro cigarettes. I guess subconsciously, I was making a statement on cigarettes (circa 1980). To sum up what I mean, the bust and sun burst pattern represent cigarettes once being considered sexy or cool, glorified by the media in some way or another. But under that facade, lies a silent killer... yeah you guessed it the lasers and I guess the stache, because all staches are killer.

I am glad that the view on cigarettes has changed. Many more laws have been passed to ban smoking in public places. One of my biggest pet peaves is going to a public place and coming back reeking of cigs. And another would be getting stuck behind somebody that is walking extremely slow, but that's a completely different post.

In the end this post post is 1/2 reaction to a friend saying that my blog wasn't political/controversial enough and 1/2 just wanting to make something cool. Plus, lasers and mustachios are the perfect combo. Enjoi! And please feel free to post a comment. Comments are like white tigers to me. AMAZING!
EDIT: While searching for white tiger pictures I came across this image of a... odd looking white tiger.

SUNDAY PAINTING

Whipped out the the oil paints this afternoon and wanted to paint something abstract for my living room that would fit in with my new painting by Felipe Merida (see Falconburger below).

I decided to play off all the vertical lines I have going on with multiple skateboards and posters hanging on the walls. I decided to add some dimensional texture with a mix of foam and fabrics glued to the canvas. And wah-lah, just like magic, I have a new ultra-radical painting. Below are the before and after shots. The painting is 16" x 20". Enjoi!

"I GOT THESE CHEESEBURGERS, MAN!"

So, to make a long story short, I got this friend at work, Felipe Merida, and he would always say this phrase, "I got these cheeseburgers, man!". Nobody really knew what it meant but it was always funny. So a few weeks ago Felipe asked me if I could order this book from Amazon for him. So, I order this book, and over the weekend I went to the BLICK store to buy canvas since they were having a big sale. So, I just happened to have all this canvas and when the book shows up I get the lightbulb, maybe Felipe will trade a painting for the book if I provide the canvas. He was down for the idea, and I started to brainstorm what I wanted.

The first thing came to mind was a cheeseburger. Yet, because of the dimensions, I knew there had to be more than just a huge 18x24" burger. I have had a huge obsession with owls for awhile, but since they are trending down at the moment, I though it could be a cooler, more timeless bird. My mind instantly went to the falcon from The Royal Tenenbaums (Mordaci), with the face hood. I knew the pairing of the two could be dynamite but it depended if Fleipe wanted to paint such an absurd combo.

Felipe was excited about the idea and took the canvas and the book and produced something truly magical. I really didn't deserve such an amazing piece of art for the small price of the book.

Here are images of the final painting, details and a work in progress shot. Enjoi!

Thanks again Tio-lipe for creating something that will keep my face radical for many years to come.

JUNIOR DETECTIVE CODE BOOK

Old collage, made from old art, from old ideas, made new again???? Can you find me dressed up like a friendly neighborhood butcher?

DOODLE-BUGS

Just some old sketches that I drew as a start to a small book I made in a book arts class. The book was titled "What Are We Becoming?" My favorite part of this collection is tht all of them have gimpy arms. Enjoi!

HOCKING HILLS CONTINUED

DAY TRIPPIN' (HOCKING HILLS STATE PARK)

I met up with my aunt and uncle from Utah who were in Columbus for the week and we took a day trip to a State Park called Hocking Hills. I have never felt more like a hippy than I did today. I was actually stunned by the radicalness of the places we saw.

The caves and stream beds are usually filled with running water creating pools and waterfalls everywhere. Unfortunately Ohio has had a really dry summer and there was no real water to be found. But even without water, I feel like I found one of those hidden gems that just makes you gasp and awe that a place like that exists.

It was so magical in fact, that I feel like with a few more trips to the place I could catch a Leprechaun and convince him to tell me where his pot of gold is. Enjoi the pics!

P.S. I would spend the gold on white tigers and capes.

RADICAL FACES 1

Its been more or less a strange day. And to top it off I got food poisoning from the Panda Bear Express. Not feeling so hot right now. My belly feels like the way the image looks.

This is yet another, really bad collage that I made from an old sketch. It was back when the emo kids were just starting to come out of the woodwork. I guess I wanted to doodle other hipster stereotypes. The stoner brains guy looks just like Honus Honus - lead singer of Man Man.

SKELETON SIDEBURNS

I designed these for little brother when he was really big into making movies in Junior High. He wanted some kind of logo to use for his production company (Skeleton Sideburns Productions). I think the logos were used on business cards. Plus since I had the skeleton as vector art my brother was nice enough to make me this sweet keychain.

KING'S QUEST VIII

So I did this sketch late Sunday night. I'm not really sure why I drew what I did, but it made me feel awesome after I finished. Hopefully you like it.

TAFFY BRAINS

Do you ever have days where it feels like somebody cracked open your noggin' and threw your brains on a taffy puller. Well, I sorta, kinda feel that way to day. I hate dealing with ultra dumb, deceitful people, they keep my face un-radical in every way. This image sums up how my brain feels today.
Got a really weird moleskin sketch coming tomorrow based on the old PC video game Kings Quest VIII. Lets just say it has a creepy king, an owl, a majestic wizard, a wise earthy mage and some other dudes.

P.S. I am feeling pretty lucky to be bloggin' tonight since category 1 hurricane winds from Ike blew threw Ohio and knocked out power in most of the city. Feeling pretty blessed that I never lost mine.

SOME CARTOONS

I remember feeling inspired one day by a drawing Mike Laughead had in his sketchbook of Batman. I guess I wanted to try my own take on a iconic superhero. The other painting I have no clue why I did it, but I think it's pretty cool that He-Man finally got his trophy (Predator style).

SOMETHING BIG (1979 - )

I have decided to dedicate a considerable amount of my free time to a pretty ambitious project that came to me after I posted the portrait of Peter Jackson. It is something that could take a while to get completed but in the end I think it will be of great value to myself and hopefully many others in the future... the distant future.

LORD OF THE FAT

I was rummaging through an old tote last night and saw this face staring back at me. He winked and promised me that his involvement in the upcoming Hobbit movies would not be a let down.

This was a painting I did while in college. I think it was a conceptual illustration class where we had to illustrate a celebrity/influential person at the time and mock it up on "Time Magazine". The ring as a head band makes me laugh because I guess he has always been a hippy not wearing shoes and all. Also kinda looks like a fat Luke Wilson (Richie Tenenbaum).

I know the painting is not that good but i just had to post it cause it was so random. Enjoi!

JUST SOME OLD DOODLE

Just some old sketch I did for a skate shop a few years ago. It was meant to be an oversized t-shirt graphic but I don't think it ever got used. I added a gradient because gradients make everything cool. I like some of the random sayings I put into the design. This drawing reminds me that my brain is full of syrup and egg whites. Nothing special, but something I really had fun drawing.

ALBUM ARTWORK OF THE YEAR

I can't remember who the band is, but when I do I will do an edit to the post. Not really sure why I like the album cover so much but I laugh every time I see it and wish that I had done it.

TEEEEEEE SHIRTS

Just a few shirts I am working on. They are still in progress, but there are very few things I do in art that don't feel inspired or affected by someone or something else. But these two designs are pure me, through and through.

THUG LIFE

I think this could be one of my best narrative/figure drawings I have ever done. I normally don't like to draw people because I tend to have a problem drawing the area between the nose and the lips. So I just draw staches on everything. Animals too! But I wanted to do a montage of themes from 80's thug culture. Silk shirts, neon stripes, balla' necklaces, white suits, tank tops, track pants and last but not least... gotta have my K-Swiss. Enjoi!

AND AGAIN, MORE MOLESKIN

Page 1 was done by my friend Mike Laughead (lawhead not laugh head) during Thanksgiving last year. Page 3 was also a collaboration between Mike and his brother-in-law Tenbu. Page 2 and 4 were done by myself. I still have a few more left to post before I am caught up with the good ones. I really need to start drawing again, I am anxious to fill the thing up and start on a new one.

INUIT/NORTHWEST PACIFC INDIAN ART

Inspiration comes from strange places but the last time I really felt inspired came from a recent trip to Chicago. I met up with my Dad who was there to do business at a candy trade show. We hauled in a ton of candy one day and the other days spent roaming around Chicago. We ended up going to the Field Museum and I totally fell in love with the Eskimo/Indian exhibit. Everything about the art from that culture speaks to me. Especially the totem poles.

Since my trip, I have been tinkering around with mixing elements of Indian style with my own. Here is a moleskin sketch I did of a creepy totem pole; mustache and all. I am still refining it before I take it to a larger scale on canvas, but I will keep you guys posted on how it's going. Enjoi!

COOLIRIS

I found about this cool plug-in for Safari and Firefox at work one day and it has changed the way I browse for inspiration on the world wide web (www). It takes a bit to get used to (I was getting a little motion sick from it), but once you do I am sure all of you will love it.

Download the free plugin here: cooliris

P.S. To go to the original source of the photo click on the small globe icon that pops up near the bottom and it will take you to flickr/google/amazon/etc. And to get back click on the bottom "Return to Cooliris" button.

MORE MOLESKIN

My favorite is the 2nd one, with the noodles and vintage sweater. What can I say, I totally love to draw noodles! I also love how using a permanent marker on the pages bleeds through and effects the others. Gives me a challenge to try and make the bleeds work into the design in some way or another.

¿GhostMane?

Some of you may wonder why I use the moniker GhostMane, well it started back in college when I wanted to play in a band and do my own thing. So, I started a band with my littlest brother Jordan (Gargoyle Wig), who was just learning the drums. The band became more of a concept than anything else, but was fun while it lasted. The concept was to write songs based around a type of monster or creature and then combine that with some sort of hair. Here is a list of songs that are written/unwritten.

WRITTEN:
Castle Danger Bangs
Pumpkin-Head Toupee
Demon Dreadlocks (Surfs Up Remix)
Flat-Top Dracula with da' Gold Chain on
Mummies Ate My Neighborhood! Bald Ones!
Count Jheri Curl
Diggin' Graves with the Bearded Lady
Manticore Stache
Skeleton Sideburns

UNWRITTEN:
Wolfman Shaved his Back
Cornrow Scarecrow
The Blonde Wizards Weave Decay
Vampire Hair Club
The Headless Horse and Man with Foot-Long Peyos
Medusas' Afro

Bald Witch Hunt (download above), was one I did on my own a few weeks ago with just my bass and GarageBand. Someone once described is as "sheer terror". I guess that means I did my job. It is by far the creepiest song I have ever written and probably will ever write. Most of the songs tend to have a Halloween dance party vibe.

So that is the story behind GhostMane.

MUST HAVE APPLICATION

So I came across this application on the iTunes App store and totally love it. It works on your Mac and iPhone and allows you to sync your music library to any computer or iPhone. So now I can have all 70GB's of music on my 16GB iPhone!!! Plus, it allows you to share your library with up to 30 people. So, if anybody wants to share music libraries give me a holla cause I still have 28 invites left.

REAL MOLESKIN

Just a few sketches from my little moleskin sketch book. I like drawing in it because the book feels more like a journal and I tend to make the sketches feel more finished. Hope you like the first batch. There will be more to come. Enjoi.

FEAR...DOES NOT EXIST...ON KEEP YOUR FACE RADICAL!

So I have finally decided on a permanent place to blog and rant and such. So get ready, because keep your face radical promises nothing more than what it states; to keep your face radical!
