NOVEMBER 2011 BLOGMAIL MIX

So...right off the back I am going to say that this mix feels all over the place. It has been a weird month for me and I guess that this mix reflects how I have felt a bit schizo. Tons of weird genres happening; from Mermen Psych Pop to Post Halloween-Post Macarena and 80's NüDisco to Lo-Fi Tropi-Pop and beyond.
Even the cover feels weird for me. It was inspired by all the OCCUPY nonsense, but more French. This mix has taught me to be excited about the weirdness of life. Boring is snoring. This mix is about 70% artists I have never heard of.

OCTOBER 2011 BLOGMAIL MIX

I hope you like the cover of this months blogmail. I have had it ready since late July. I actually made the art for my Dad's birthday; weird, I know, but my Dad has an eclectic taste and I thought he would like it. I gave it to him as a framed 18x18 glossy print. It turned out pretty sweet! I wanted to modernize an old mayan turquoise artifact. Art prints will be available upon request (sans the blogmail type).

The mix has a few spooky song on it but overall it is just a normal mix. I personally think that Halloween has some of the worst music of any holiday. Maybe Ghost Mane (my old band with my brother) will have a reunion when he gets back from his LDS mission in a month and we can get some proper songs recorded for next Halloween. I wouldn't hold your breath, but it could happen. Enjoi, and have a great Halloween, Dia de los Muertos, Alla Helgons Dag or whatever you semi celebrate tomorrow!

SEPTEMBER BLOGMAIL MIX 2011

First things first, this cat is not photoshopped. Even though I am totally skilled enough (see here) to do it. Here's the story with the cover...cats rule the internet, and are usually pretty funny. I have done a few cat covers in the past but when I read this article I kinda felt that it needed to be part of the mix. The picture is just soo weird!!! Normally you would think a two faced cat would be utterly grotesque, but for some reason I don't. The more I look at it the more it starts to look normal. Its' pretty amazing this cat has lived 12 years. Frank and Louie, thanks for defying the odds. The type was inspired by type on the poster for the musical CATS.

AUGUST BLOGMAIL MIX 2011

I hope you're all ready for the mix this month! It's a lot like putting your face in lava. No, not face melting, just...hard to top.

Some months are a toal struggle to get a solid 15+ songs together and others like this one, have been a real treat to compile. Just one amazing song after the next. This months mix includes 15 different covers 40 songs!!!! I know, I know, I spoil you guys.

As far as the covers go, I really just wanted to play around with landscapes, color and cutouts. But there is also a trend in many of the songs on the mix; being new songs that sound old. In a way that concept ties back to the art a bit. I really love the way most of them turned out. In the two days that I've had them done I have already had several gawkers on the subway trying to figure out what I'm listening to. Well, too bad gawkers, you're not elite enough to be part of the blogmail mixes so...step off.

JULY 2011 BLOGMAIL MIX PART: 2 OF 2

Round 2. So this mix was a really hard one to put together. It just seemed like I had to troll through 10 bad songs to find 1 mix worthy. It actually was a bit exhausting. Especially since I knew I needed to find 23+ songs since I already had the covers done.
The covers were inspired by the Unknown Mortal Orchestra album cover. The first time I saw it, I was really intrigued by the super odd edifice. I did some research and found out that it was one of 25 abandoned former Yugoslavian War Monuments. I knew after seeing them all that they would make a perfect series for the blogmail mix. The photography is from the book Spomenik by Jan Kempenaears. I love how otherworldly they all are. I think I might have to buy the book and frame some of them for my apartment. And as far as the type...I felt that a hand-drawn bubble 3D type would really be a great juxtaposition to the monuments. But thats just how my brain works.

JUNE BLOGMAIL MIX 2011

The mix is coming out a bit early this month, boo, yea, whatever. Most of don't care, but I have a few followers that might lose their minds if I decided to stop doing these. I figured I already had 31 solid tracks and the art done since early this week so why not upload it today so people can let it soak in before the big holiday weekend. I hope you like the cover this month, I designed a couple different ones but everyone seemed to like the peacock one the best. Why have I never thought to combine peacocks and paisley before now? I might take out the type and do a limited run art print if anyone is interested??

Also, the rules have changed a bit. I will no longer be doing just one mix a month. I have been pondering this for a while and as of July you may or may not get more than just one mix a month. It really just comes down to that fact that i want to create more art than just one cover/theme a month. There could possibly be more mini mixes (probably nothing under 10 songs). But as of right now I have ideas for at least two for July. Better for you and more experimentation for me on the art front.

MAY BLOGMAIL MIX 2011

So the covers are a bit of a remix on the July 2010 covers. I wanted to do something with vintage photography. I was on some weird French ephemera blog and came across this strange board game where there were 4 face (2 men and 2 women) and then there were smaller cards with various various eyes, noses and mouths. I got everything into Photoshop and then just experimented with the many disturbing combinations that came to life. I then added a ink dyed kaleidoscope texture to make them feel more modern. I hope you like them. I have already received two comments on the subway about them. People seem a little freaked out by their subtle disturbing qualities. I like them a lot and I think they are the most conceptual of all the blogmail covers I have done. Enjoi them and the mix!

Sorry this is so late but April was a super busy month. I was preparing to speak to a group of art students at BYU-Idaho about my career as an apparel graphic designer. The presentation went really well and I had a lot of fun doing it and being back home with family and friends. The art work on the cover was inspired by the new Washed Out record but I used an image I photographed from a Winchester rifle box in my brothers bedroom. It looks like the cowboy is giving the horse an uppercut (even though he isn't). I like it because when I was 8 I was kicked in the head by a horse...so this is my revenge mix. Enjoi!

MAJESTIC DECEMBER 2010 BLOGMAIL MIX

Let's face it, the Holidays can be...kitchy. All sorts of cheesy traditions and decorations that are fun but when you really look at them, they are pretty tacky. Thus, the cover was born for the December mix. I looked at what I had and hadn't done art wise for the mixes and I hadn't really poked fun at anything. So, this cover was designed with a collage of snow animals and a super tacky font that just screams soap opera. It says December in the most majestic way.

I hope everyone has a great Christmas and an ever more greaterer New Year.

NOVEMBER 2010 BLOGMAIL MIX

I found putting a mix together this month quite stressful. I would search and search and come up empty. I would say 50% of the songs were found over the Thanksgiving break. The cover artwork was contributed by Maris Turner. I asked him to draw a curly horned ram. I tweaked the colors a bit, but its definitely a Maris original. Enjoi the mix ya turkeys!

3 YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF BLOGMAIL COVERS

I did it, 3 years of Blogmail mix covers! It has been a lot of work (some months a lot more than others; June and July 2010) but also a lot of fun to experiment with type, photography, color etc. I love doing them and there is usually something during the month that I think of that just seems to fit perfectly with the mix. I hope you guys like them as much as the mixes. I sort of feel like the art of mix making is starting to die due to media being so rapidly consumed on the internet. Many times I wonder why I still keep the monthly format going instead of going to a weekly mix or just a daily blog. Then, I think back to comments or emails I have received about the mixes and realize that there is something great to waiting. I hope that as the end of the each month nears that you get a small lump of excitement for the mixes. Like trying to fall asleep on Christmas Eve. If we don't, than maybe the internet has ruined us forever.

I would love to hear which cover/mix has been your favorite. Cheers, and a toast to many more mixes and covers to come.

This is another side project I am working on with friends from work. It is a graphic novel that we work on randomly while on breaks/lunch at work. Each person creates a frame in the story and then passes it on. When we fill up a page we post it here:

Who know how long it will last but it is pretty enjoyable to see how the story evolves/devolves.

For those who don't know the Gowanus is one of the most polluted canals in the universe. Scientists have actually found live STD's in it. A baby whale nicknamed "Sludgy" got trapped in it and died after 1: living in the foulest muck imaginable and 2: Colliding into an old bulkhead at the bottom of the canal. I have become mildly obsessed with the canal mainly due to the fact that I always like to tell people that I am going windsurfing on it during the weekend. The ironic part of that joke is that I have actually seen people canoeing on it. Why would canoe on a canal that if you fell into you would come out with gangrene and possibly and STD. Scary, I know, but enjoy the graphic novel. Which really has nothing to do with the actual canal but I guess shares a similar bond to it in tone.

Artwork was inspired by the the fact that I haven't done a cover with lasers in a while; since the cats actually. I thought I would move lasers on by making them white. Cause white lasers are the hottest of all lasers. And not many people would think to use lasers as negative space. I also thought it would be a good idea to get the font Hobo in there since I thought it related to the 70's poncho man. Clean, modern, retro and stupidly pointless all at the same time.

BEAUTIFUL RED HOOK, BK

Just a few images I shot on my phone wile in Red Hook yesterday. The first image is a shot of the Verazzano Bridge from Pier 41 next to Steve's Authentic Key Lime Pie. Go there and try the Swingle, it's totally amazing! The second image is of this old abandoned concrete silo that apparently the Fire Department uses to train firefighters. Both images have some tilt shift trickery. Enjoi!

The card reads,"The creature in the box is something I found at mejor precio (good price) de una tienda China cerca de la frontera (from a store Chinese store close to the boarder). I call it a seahorse rooster fish".

The yellow rooster nose broke off in the pkg. Boo!!

The rest of the card reads "Happy Birthday brother! Man you are just getting real old. Hope your day was full of unicorn food! And 3 musky llamas".

July's mix has custom artwork for each track. The images were taken from Spanish actor trading cards. I know the images are amazing but I like how the eyeball is always trapped in the letter "U". Not all of the covers above were used. The type was just an experiment in color and texture.

So this months mix is late...I know, but I have been busy. And I came up with a concept near the end of the month that took some extra time. Maybe its more of a surprise or a game but each song has its own artwork. They all look cohesive through color and palm tree overlays so you'll know its part of the June mix. It was fun trying to find an image that worked with either the band name or the song title. Some of the images are pretty obscure so if you can't figure out what they are just e-mail me.

I head back to NYC tomorrow after being in Honduras and Guatemala City for the week. I love Latin American countries. And it has been very interesting to see signs of the volcano eruption and floods all over the city. There is literally dark grey ash all over the city. It has been cleaned up extensively over the last week, but what remains is still pretty impressive. All along the roads there are piles of ash or garbage bags full of it everywhere. It looks more like the volcano erupted pepper; seeing as it has the same texture.

Why are volcanos so trendy this year?

I want to make a this a tradition where every year I design a Christmas card based on my more DESIGNER side and another based on my more ILLUSTRATOR side. Here is the DESIGNER side card for this year. Watch for the ILLUSTRATOR version coming next weekend.

The designs were all drawn in Illustrator and then the textures were created in Photoshop using channels. The idea came from a teepee drawing I did on the subway the other day and after looking at it realized that with a star on top could look like a Christmas tree. Merry Christmas in Navajo and BOOM!, my 2009 Christmas card. Enjoi.

Its pretty weird but wait till the 2nd song kicks in at around 2:30. AWESOME!!! The Tristeza song reminds me of an old friend Ben Hayes and how he used to noodle around in his old band Lamborghini. Sorry, I was hoping to have this done earlier in the week but I have been feeling strange for the last few days and not sure what is wrong with me.

So the playlist tells a bit of a story.

There is DANGER and a WARNING due to the FULL MOON and duh, SHE WOLVES... no wait its ZOMBIES and they are SHAKING UP THE CITY with their SLOW WALK. Then there is A BROKEN SKELETON KEY and I am CONVINCED OF THE HEX that goes with it. Then, I hear a COFFIN TRICK so I jump in car. But wait...MY CAR IS HAUNTED so I pull over and go to the DISCO WITH THE DEVIL. I hate it there because I hate the devil and there are BAD ROBOTS. So I go to a friends house but THRE ARE GHOSTS IN THIS HOUSE, even a GLASS GHOST. I go home and count sheep to fall asleep. I dream of not 1, not 2, but 3 witches. A normal WITCH, THE WITCH and later I am involved in a BALD WITCH HUNT. The End.

So here is the final painting I had commissioned from Paul Rentler. It was a perfect accumulation of our points of view. I knew I wanted to have Skeletor and then I mentioned I wanted him to be fighting Teen Wolf or a Transformer so I got Soundwave (my personal favorite Transformer) and his cassette Lazerbeak. And then Slimer just really needed to be there too.

Here is what somebody said on Facebook:

"Lazerbeak rules! there is no way skeletor would get the drop on him. Anyway, if he did, ravage would totally pounce on his *%#!"

and Paul's reply:

"You've got it all wrong Skeletor is only trying to stun Lazerbeak so he can tag him, and monitor his migration patterns. Slimer is there to make sure its done in a humane manner."

I totally love the painting and can't wait to hang it up in my new Brooklyn apartment. See the post below for process. Enjoi!

Went to Gallery Hop last night and saw some amazing work by a Columbus artist named Paul Rentler. I really wanted to buy the painting shown above, but with the move to NY coming up, it didn't make the most sense. I will probably regret not buying it for a longtime but I contacted him on Facebook and I might commission him to do another Skeletor painting. Maybe Skeletor fighting Teen Wolf while the Decepticon SoundWave referees? Or Teen Wolf fighting Beast Man in front of Wolf Mountain. What do you guys think of those ideas? You guys know how fond I am of werewufs.

I had to make a post about this artist after seeing some of her stuff on fffound.

When I first saw her paintings I thought there was something really unusual about the way her scenics looked. They seemed more like toys than real life. Then I read on her website that she actually creates detailed 3D models to serve as evolving still lifes from which she paints her narrative paintings. Pretty awesome! I love the way her trees and water look. Enjoi!

The Band: Neon Indian

The Buzz: A collaboration between Alan Polomo and visual artist Alicia Scardetta, Neon Indian gained early buzz by successfully keeping their identities a well-guarded secret. Over time they were outed, but that didn’t quell the hype. A seamless integration of Palomo’s heavy-lidded junk-fi techno and Scardetta’s trippy visuals, Neon Indian are perfecting a kind of dance music for the lazy. One of their songs is called “Terminally Chill,” which actually describes their sound perfectly.

Listen If: You know, you’re terminally chill.

Sounds Like: “Deadbeat Summer” sounds like a MGMT record warped in the sun and played at the wrong rpm. Perfect for these warmer evenings and lazy days ahead.

Key Track: Blog breakout “Deadbeat Summer,” a 900-ton piece of electropop that’s fantastically sluggish — the sound of dance music doused with cough syrup and fronted by a guy who sings as if he’s distracted by the television.
